About Bart De Strooper
Short bio
Bart De Strooper is professor in dementia research at the University College London, UK. He has been the founding director of the UK Dementia Research Institute (2016-2023) and is now a group leader in the same institute. He is also parttime Professor of molecular medicine at the KU Leuven and VIB, Belgium.
De Strooper’s scientific work focuses on the understanding of the fundamental mechanisms that underlie Alzheimer’s disease. His major findings are the role of ADAM10 and presenilin/gamma-secretase in the proteolysis of the amyloid precursor protein and Notch, and he has worked on microRNA, mitochondria, and more recently on the role of the different brain cell types in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s Disease. He developed a novel theory for Alzheimer’s Disease which he called the cellular phase, to explain the long prodromal phase of the disorder. He received his M.D. in 1985 and Ph.D. in 1991 from KU Leuven. He worked as postdoctoral researcher in the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany, in the laboratory of Carlos Dotti.
In 2018, Bart De Strooper, together with John Hardy, Christian Haas, and Michel Goedert, was awarded the Brain Prize for their ground-breaking research on the genetic and molecular basis of Alzheimer disease. Other awards include the Potamkin Award of the American Academy of Neurology in 2002 (USA). the 2003 Alois Alzheimer Award of the Deutscher Gesellschaft für Gerontopsychiatrie und psychotherapie (Germany), the Joseph Maisin Prize in 2005 for fundamental biomedical sciences, (FWO Flanders, Belgium), the 2008 Metlife Foundation Award for medical research (USA) and the 2018 European Grand Prix for Research (France).

Current positions
Since 2016
Director of the UK Dementia Research Institute
This new function brings the responsibility to create a world-class dementia research institute in the UK. I have established the hub at University College London and five additional centres at King’s College, Imperial College, Cambridge, Cardiff and Edinburgh. The focus is fundamental cutting-edge research into the causes and basic care of dementia.
Since 2013
Professor at the Institute of Neurology, University College London, UK
This position provides the bridge between my molecular and functional research and the world class genetics and clinics of UCL in the field of neurodegenerative diseases I have contributed successfully to the application for and the start of the ARUK institute for drug discovery at UCL.
Since 2010
Co-founder and director of LIND, Leuven Research Institute for Neuroscience & Disease
In this function I have brought together more than 40 principal investigators together with their research groups (>400 active scientists) in Leuven. I have helped to foster collaboration, meetings (the LIND seminars), and to increase the support for neuroscience in Leuven. This has generated a bridge between basic science and the neurological clinic (memory clinic, the ALS and Parkinson clinic and the imaging clinic. I have also set up ‘Stellar’, which is a new funding scheme by Janssen pharmaceutics to support academic translation of research into neurodegenerative diseases (started in Leuven, and is now BENELUX wide).
Since 2002
Full Professor in Molecular Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, KU Leuven
Since 1998
Group leader at VIB, Leuven
I have established an excellent and successful research group working on various aspects of dementia with focus on Alzheimer and Parkinson disease. We are studying mechanisms of disease, identify drug targets and work closely together with industry to make novel therapies for these dreadful diseases.

Advocacy
Bart De Strooper is strongly committed to science policy and the future of young researchers. As a member of the academic council he was involved in the development of a reformed doctoral training program which was implemented in the Doctoral School Biomedical Sciences, and later he was program director of the training program of Biomedical Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine (2002-2006). He also was cofounder of the Belgian Association for Science ‘Focus Research’ which organized the general assembly of science in Belgium, and the big manifestation for a better science policy in 1993 which resulted in a complete overhaul of Flemish science policy.
